James E. GALE was born on 16 May 1785 in Putnam Valley, Putnam, New York. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Putnam Co., New York. The town of Putnam Valley, County of Putnam, N.Y. is listed as the town on the census, BUT the area where their farm was located was known as Oregon Corners and actually was part of Peekskill, Westchester County, New York. However, they associated with Putnam and are on the Putnam County Census.

James Gale and his wife Catherine are listed in the 1850 Putnam County census taken on 23 July 1850 on pg. 46. GS film 58118 pts 110-115. Children listed on that census include Robert, Catherine, Joseph, Mary J., Jacob and John. At that time James was 60 yrs and his wife, Catherine, was 50. James was listed as a farmer on the census. He died on 26 Nov 1851 in Putnam Valley, Putnam, New York. He was buried in St. Peter's Cem, Peekskill, Westchester, New York. James died at 66 yrs 6 mos. 10 days of age per headstone in St. Peter's Cemetery (used to calculate DOB) as recorded in G.S. Film #17999, Marriages/Dates from Gen. and Church Records 1683-1906. James' mother went from Peekskill to Albany @102 yrs of age and died there.

Son Robert D. Gale shows on 1860 census as 9 yrs old. Shown with Ann & Leander P., mother Ruth married Godfrey Lent. Leander died at 32 yrs. on 12/17/1852.

There is an Edith L. Homan in St. Peter's Cemetery that is supposed the widow of Leander Gale. She died 15 Nov 1904 at 81 yrs. (DOB 1822). No record found that this Leander had a wife named Edith.

Leander appears to have been a fairly common name in the Gale family. The only wife documented is Ruth. Parents: James E. GALE and Catherine MINCKLER.

Family records of unknown origin state she was a daughter of James Gale I and married George Washington Odell and had children George, Edna, Cornelia, Robert, Ferdinand and Wilbert. Shown on 1850 Putnam County, NY, census, p. 46, GS58118 pts 110-115 as child of James Gale. Also note from Irma Franklin of Putnam County Historical Society dated 10 Nov 1974 for DOB, DOD and DOM; notation that Mary Jane was the 6th child. Parents: James E. GALE and Catherine MINCKLER.

Peter GALE was born in 1819 in Putnam Valley, Putnam, New York. He died on 21 Apr 1904. A lengthy article on Peter Gale was published in the Peekskill, New York Evening News on September 19, 1936.

More information is contained in several scrapbooks compiled by Estella Cummins Sands. Some of the data from the scrapbooks was sent from the Putnam County Historical Society when I requested information on the Gale family. It said, "Uncle Peter ran a tavern-Post Office combined--a popular place for people of the neighborhood to stop and exchange pleasantries. Uncle Peter was a bon vivant old soul, beloved by grown-ups and children alike. Surveyor, civil engineer, mineralogist, astronomer, authority on the raising of bees--yes, even a poet--'Uncle Peter' was an important cog in the life of the community of his day."

Peter Gale never married. He was living with his brother, Joseph, for the 1860 census and Peter was shown as a farmer and 36 yrs old at that time. Parents: James E. GALE and Catherine MINCKLER.
