Alfonso Coleman HARWELL was born on 10 Aug 1834 in Pulaski, Tennessee. The earliest record I have found of A. C. is in the 1850 census,
living with his parents and 7 siblings in Grundy County, Tennessee.
In the 1860 census, he is listed separate from his parents living in
Lawrence County, Tennessee. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. He died on 27 Jan 1914 in Tarrant Co., Texas. He was buried on 29 Jan 1914 in Lewisville, Denton Co., Texas. Alfonso was born in Tennessee in 1834, the second of eight children of
Josiah and Rebecca Harwell. He had five brothers and two sisters. He
married Mary Elizabeth Miller in 1860 and they eventually had eight
surviving children of their own, including my paternal grandfather,
Clarence. There is some information indicating they had one child who
did not survive infancy, or early childhood.
Less than a year after his marriage, Alfonso enlisted in the
Confederate Army, and served for the duration of the Civil War. He
obviously had opportunities to spend time with his family during his
service. Their first child, Lieu Alice, was born eleven months after
his enlistment, and their second, Will, was born approximately one
month after his release from the military.
About 1868, the young family moved to Arkansas. Two children and
approximately ten years later, they migrated to Texas, taking up
residence initially in Ellis County. About 1884, they moved to Denton
County, then, about 1900, they moved to Tarrant County in or near
Smithfield (now North Richland Hills), which was their residence at
the times of both Elizabeth's and Alfonso's death, 1902 and 1914
respectively. Census records indicate that Alfonso derived his
livelihood from farming. Parents: Josiah HARWELL and Rebecca.

Spouse: Mary Elizabeth MILLER. Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER were married on 13 Sep 1860 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. The 1860 Federal Census taken earlier in the year of their marriage
shows A. C. Harwell, age 23 (should have been 25), as a member of the
Lewis and Margaret M. Miller household (Mary Elizabeth's parents)
residing in Lawrence County. Elizabeth was listed as 15 years old in
that Census. Alfonso and Mary Elizabeth were married later that year
by Justice of the Peace W. C. Davis, as recorded in the publication
"Early Marriages In Central Tennessee", a compilation of marriage
records from between 1787 and 1875. Children were: Lieu Alice HARWELL, William A. (Will) HARWELL, Lewis Monroe (Mon) HARWELL, Rebecca (Mel) HARWELL, Lillian HARWELL, Lawson HARWELL, Clarence HARWELL, Cleo (Aunt Clee) HARWELL.

Ambrose HARWELL was born about 1735 in Virginia. He signed a will on 19 Jun 1802 in Iredell Co., North Carolina. According to information provided by the Harwell Family Association. He died in 1803 in Iredell Co., North Carolina. Parents: Little Samuel HARWELL and Anne JACKSON.

Cecil Eugene HARWELL was born in 1919 in Smithfield, Texas. Cecil Eugene died within hours after birth, not an unusual occurrence
for the time. He died in 1919 in Smithfield, Texas. He was buried in 1919 in Smithfield, Texas. Cecil Eugene, the last of eight children born to Clarence and Effie,
died within hours after birth, died within hours after birth. Parents: Clarence HARWELL and Effie Ann LITTLE.

Chad Ture HARWELL. Parents: Clyde Elton (Skip) HARWELL III and Bonnie Lee FINCH.

Clarence HARWELL was born on 27 Dec 1882 in Ellis Co., Texas. He died on 20 Feb 1955 in Haltom City, Tarrant Co., Texas. My recollection of my grandfather's death, as related to me by my
father, is that he was having breakfast on the morning he died, and
told my grandmother that he really didn't feel well. He got up from
the table, took a few steps and keeled over dead, as it was later
determined, of a heart attack! I also recall that after his body was
prepared for burial and placed in a coffin, the coffin was placed in
the living room of their home on Fisher Street in Haltom City, Texas,
and family and friends visited him there. I was 20 years old at the
time, and married.
I also remember his funeral, how well attended it was, and what a
broad spectrum of society was in attendance. Clarence was the next to youngest of eight children of A.C. and
Elizabeth Harwell. The family migrated to Texas sometime between 1877
and 1880. The family is recorded in the 1880 U.S. Census residing in
Ellis County, Texas. Parents: Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER.

Spouse: Effie Ann LITTLE. Clarence HARWELL and Effie Ann LITTLE were married in 1900 in Tarrant Co., Texas. It was related to me during a family visit in 1994 by one of my aunts
or uncles, either Jake or Eula, that Clarence and Effie met at a ball
game in which Clarence was one of the participants (probably about
1899 or 1900). At this writing, I do not know the exact date of their
marriage. However, their first child, Audrey Pauline, was born
sometime in 1901 when Effie would have been age 16, so it seems
logical to assume they were married about the year 1900. In 1900,
Effie was living with her family in Tarrant County, Smithfield
Precinct, according to the U.S. Census of that year. They apparently
settled somewhere in the Smithfield (now North Richland Hills) area. Children were: Clyde Elton HARWELL, Roy Clarence (Mutt) HARWELL, Audrey Pauline HARWELL, Eula Vera HARWELL, Mildred Leona (Polly) HARWELL, Milton Leon (Jake) HARWELL, Cecil Eugene HARWELL, Clarice Gertrude HARWELL.

Clarice Gertrude HARWELL was born on 6 Nov 1903 in Smithfield, Texas. She died on 21 Oct 1970 in Del Norte, Colorado. Gertrude and John had a cabin in the mountains of Colorado. They
were at their cabin when Gertrude died. She had been battling a
cancer, and apparently died of a stroke while in Colorado. She was buried on 24 Oct 1970 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas. Gertrude was brought home for burial. Parents: Clarence HARWELL and Effie Ann LITTLE.

Cleo (Aunt Clee) HARWELL was born on 12 Apr 1885 in Denton Co., Texas. She died on 5 May 1969 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas. She was buried on 7 May 1969 in Smithfield, Texas. Parents: Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER.

Clyde Elton HARWELL was born on 28 Dec 1908 in Smithfield, Texas. My father and namesake. We have always considered Dad's birth year to
be 1908. However, I have as yet not found an official record of his
birth. Among the artifacts I have accumulated is a postcard mailed
from Smithfield, TX postmarked February 10, [UL:1910:UL], from his
sister, Gertrude, who would have been 6 years old at the time, to her
young uncle Howard Little in Kennedale, TX, in which she declares
"--we have named brother his name is Clide (sic) Elton.", compelling
evidence that Dad may have been born in 1909! He died on 6 Jan 1962 in Long Beach, California. Dad's body was found on the street in Long Beach, California, outside
a boarding house in which he had stayed for several days prior to his
death. His body was taken to St. Mary's Hospital at 10th and Linden
Streets in Long Beach where he was declared "Dead On Arrival" at 6:35
am. The cause of death given on the death certificate is "Gun-shot
wound of chest penetrating heart and left lung with massive
hemorrhage", and the "Injury Information" specifies "Suicide", with
Time of Injury "prior to 6:15 am". However, there is much
speculation, particularly among family members and associates close to
Dad, that he was more likely a victim of a homicide. There are many
peculiarities associated with his activities in and around the time of
his death that tend to support such a premise, the details of which
will not be discussed at this time since I have embarked upon a search
for the truth concerning his death, and hopefully will be able to
report my findings in the not to distant future.
At the time of his death, Mother and Dad were living at 220 Ocean
Vista in Playa Del Rey, California, a lovely condominium near the
beach that Barbara had helped them finish out and furnish when they
bought it a short time earlier. I was on active military duty with my
home station being at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and on tour of duty to
Fort Knox, Kentucky where I was attending Armored Officer's Basic
Training. Barbara and I and the kids were living in Elizabethtown,
KY, a small, historic town near the base, it having been the home of
Abraham Lincoln and his parents when he was a child. Some of the town
buildings bore the wounds of Civil War battles!
When we learned of his death, I took "Leave" and flew to California on
military flights. It was an interesting itinerary which is described
in more detail in my outline. Janis and I made the arrangements for
Dad's burial after I arrived. Services were held in the Wee Kirk O'
The Heather Chapel with interment in the Court Of Freedom.
In the few days I had after his burial and before I had to return to
Fort Knox, I spent time retracing some of Dad's movements, and talking
to some of the people who had seen him. I also talked to the Long
Beach police, including the investigating detectives, but learned
little more about his death than the facts they had adopted as
official to lead them to their official conclusion. I am hopeful that
my more recent search will lead to conclusive answers to the mystery
surrounding his death, and a more certain closure to what has been,
and continues to be at this time, a sad and frustrating episode in the
life of our family. He was buried on 10 Jan 1962 in Glendale, California. Dad was buried space 3, lot 4234, Court of Freedom section of Forest
Lawn Cemetery. Parents: Clarence HARWELL and Effie Ann LITTLE.

Spouse: Evelyn Louise NICHOLS. Clyde Elton HARWELL and Evelyn Louise NICHOLS were married on 26 Nov 1925 in Weatherford, Texas. I am not certain exactly when Mother and Dad met. Mother did tell me
that they met at a dance she attended with some of her girlfriends.
Weatherford, a small town about 30 miles west of Fort Worth, was, for
many years - and may still be, a popular location for young, informal
marriages. I don't have any details about their marriage - who the
attendants were, etc., but it must have been a pretty good one as
they remained married until Dad's premature death in 1962. My sister
Janis' first marriage also took place in Weatherford.
After they were married, they made their home in and around Fort Worth
until some time in 1935 when the family moved the Houston, Texas. In
1929, when Janis was born, they lived in Haltom City on Dorris Street
(now Oak Knoll). Later, they lived at 4635 El Campo in the Arlington
Heights section of Fort Worth, and then in the Morningside section of
town at 936 Morningside Drive where the family was residing in 1934
when I was born. The El Campo and Morningside Drive houses are still
in use today. When I was about 6 months old, I am told, the family
moved to Houston where it remained until February 1939, when we
returned to Fort Worth.
Shortly after I was born, and before we moved to Houston, the family
moved back to Daggett Street with Evelyn's mother, my grandmother
Nichols (Moms), who, by that time was a widow, grandfather Nichols (A.
B.) having died in 1932. In fact, according to Janis, all of the kids
except Gerald, including their families, were living with Moms. This
was during the depression years and times were tough. Then, in 1935,
our dad was offered a job in Houston, Texas, and we moved there. Children were: Clyde Elton HARWELL Jr., Janis Anne HARWELL, Jerry Ross HARWELL.
