Joseph HARWELL was born about 1772 in North Carolina. Year and date unknown at this writing. Estimating birth and marriage on birth year of son, Josiah, born 1792. He died about 1800 in North Carolina. No information available at this writing as to the year or place of
Joseph's death, or that of Nancy Harwell, his wife. There is a
reference in the 1810 Census of North Carolina to a Nancy Harwell
living in Iredell County, which is where family information indicates
Joseph's father, Lemuel, relocated to from Virginia. The same records
indicate Nancy's father, Ambrose, also moved to Iredell County about
the same time. Lemuel and Ambrose had lived on adjacent properties in
Virginia before moving to North Carolina. Parents: Lemuel HARWELL and Lucretia BULL.

Spouse: Nancy HARWELL. Joseph HARWELL and Nancy HARWELL were married about 1790 in North Carolina. Exact year unknown. Joseph and Nancy were first cousins, their respective fathers, Lemuel and Ambrose, being brothers, sons of "Little" Samuel Harwell and Anne /Jackson/ Harwell.
Census records indicate a son, Josiah, was born in 1792, and there is no information at this time whether Josiah had any siblings from this marriage. Children were: Josiah HARWELL.

Josiah HARWELL was born in 1792 in North Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. Josiah appeared in the 1850 Cencus at age 58, born in North Carolina,

Lawson HARWELL was born on 28 Sep 1880 in Ellis Co., Texas. He died on 5 Sep 1953 in Denton, Texas. My personal recollection, from what my father said, regarding Lawson's
death is that he went to his doctor's office on the day he died for a
physical checkup and the doctor told him he was in good physical
condition. Shortly after leaving the doctor's office, however, he
dropped dead of a heart attack on the sidewalk outside the doctor's
office. He was buried on 7 Sep 1953 in Denton, Texas. I have personal recollections of "Uncle Laws" from my childhood, and
remember visiting he and Aunt Bessie at their home in Denton with my
parents on many occasions. It was always a pleasurable experience.
Laws worked for the railroad as a conductor, and I remember, it seems,
riding a train to Houston on which he was the conductor. Of course, I
was less than 10 years old, and it is a little hazy, to say the least.
I certainly remember spending summers on his farm near Sanger, Texas,
when I was in the second and third grades and living in Gainesville,
Texas. The farm was operated by his only child, Nat, and his wife,
Lela. Their daughter, Donna Bess, about my age, and I had a lot of
fun, some of my fondest childhood memories! Parents: Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER.

Lewis Monroe (Mon) HARWELL was born in 1867 in Tennessee. Lewis was the third child of A.C. and Elizabeth Harwell. He was
probably born in Lawrence County, Tennessee since both his and
Elizabeth's parents were shown to be residing in Lawrence County in
the 1860 Federal Census, and in the 1870 census, Lewis and his family
are found to be in Arkansas. He died on 1 Mar 1932 in Smithfield, Texas. He was buried on 3 Mar 1932 in Smithfield, Texas. Mutt mentioned that Mon ran the cotton gin in Grapevine, Texas. His
children, Ray, Rood and Artie, all migrated to California where they
and their families have remained. Mon's wife, Myrtle, moved to
California after his death and died there while living with her
daughter, Artie, in Ukiah, CA, where Artie owned and operated a
grocery store. Parents: Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER.

Spouse: Myrtle ROOD. Lewis Monroe (Mon) HARWELL and Myrtle ROOD were married in 1892 in Smithfield, Texas. Children were: Ray Monroe HARWELL, Rood Alfonso HARWELL, Artie HARWELL.

Lieu Alice HARWELL was born on 22 Jun 1862 in Tennessee. She died on 10 Jun 1913 in Lewisville, Denton Co., Texas. She was buried on 12 Jun 1913 in Lewisville, Denton Co., Texas. Parents: Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER.

Spouse: Francis Milton KEESEE. Francis Milton KEESEE and Lieu Alice HARWELL were married in 1880 in Ellis Co., Texas. Exact date and location of this marriage is not clear at this writing.
No marriage record has been found in either Ellis County, Tarrant
County, or Denton County, the three Texas counties in which Alfonso
resided after moving to Texas sometime between his daughter Lillian's
birth in 1877, and the 1880 Federal Census. Information in Alfonso's
Confederate Pension Application states that the family moved to Denton
County in 1884. There is also evidence that the Keesee family was
prominent in Ellis County, in and around Ovilla, Texas. It appears,
then, that both Lieu Alice and Francis Keesee were young adults in
Ellis County in the year 1880, and we know that their daughter, Prue,
was born in Ovilla in 1886. Those combined factors point to a
marriage sometime between 1880 and 1885, probably in the county of
their residence.
In April 1997, I visited the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church in
Ovilla. Frankie Lou Mesnard had mentioned the church, and the fact
that it bore a plaque commemorating the charity and efforts of Earl
Palmer Harwell, then of Tulsa Oklahoma, for having saved the sanctuary
in 1948 from certain demolition . According to some printed
information published by the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, Earl
Harwell moved to Tulsa from Ovilla, Texas in 1906. His wife, Mary
(Keesee) Harwell, was from Tulsa. Mr. Harwell "-- was one of three
partners in McCann Oil. In 1916, he made his fortune when he sold his
portion of the company to a subsidiary of Standard Oil for over $30
million." Mr. Harwell became a benefactor of the University of Tulsa
and is credited with assisting the creation of the Tulsa Boys Home.
His wife became a patron of the arts.
Between 1923 and 1926, Mr. and Mrs. Harwell built [IT:Harwellden:IT],
a 4-story, 30 room mansion which covers a full city block at 2210 Main
Street in Tulsa. [IT:Harwelden:IT] is Welsh for "place from which the
Harwells came". Upon her death in 1967, Mary Harwell bequeathed
[IT:Harwelden:IT] to the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa. It now
offices the Council, as well as the Tulsa Ballet Theatre and the Tulsa
Philharmonic Orchestra. The American Institute of Architects occupies
the renovated carriage house. In 1978, [IT:Harwelden:IT] was placed
on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1983, the
Mapleridge District in which it is located was placed on the National
Register of Historic Districts.
Information provided by [IT::IT]The Harwell Researcher[IT::IT], a
publication of research regarding the Harwell family lines in the
United States, indicates that Earl Palmer Harwell (b:12/17/1882, Ellis
Co., TX, d: 1950, Tulsa, OK) was the son of Jasper M. D. Harwell,
brother of Alfonso Coleman Harwell, and my 3rd cousin, as well as that
of Frankie Lou Mesnard. At this writing, we have not established a
relationship between Francis Milton Keesee and Mary Keesee Harwell.
While visiting the Shiloh Church in Ovilla, I was fortunate to meet
Mr. Jessie Ohr, a member of the church for 75 years and Session Leader
of the area Session of the Presbetary, who gave me a private tour and
told me of some of the history of the church. It is his recollection
that a sister of Earl Harwell married into the prominent C. K. White
family of Ellis County. Children were: Prue KEESEE.

Lillian HARWELL was born in 1877 in Arkansas. She died in 1915 in Tarrant Co., Texas. Little is known of Lillian. She first appears in the 1880 US Census
report as a 3 - year old born in Arkansas residing with her parents
and siblings in Ellis County, Texas.
Mutt (Roy C.) Harwell, a nephew of Lillian, recalled (in 1994) that
Lillian was living with her father, A. C. Harwell, when he died in
1914. After that, apparently, she lived with various relatives from
time to time until her death sometime around 1920, possibly before.
Mutt does not recall when she died, or how old he was at the time.
Jake (Milton L.) Harwell, another nephew, thinks that Lillian was
living with his parents, Clarence and Effie Harwell, in a small house
in the rear of their home on Davis Blvd. (now in North Richland Hills,
TX) when he and Polly (Mildred Leona), his twin sister, were born in
1917. However, Jake has no firsthand recollection of Lillian.
Frankie Lou Mesnard thinks that Lillian lived with Cleo (Harwell) and
Henry Simmons at one time. Jackie Nell (Simmons) Rowley, Cleo's
granddaughter, is unable to verify that, however, she does recall Cleo
talking about Lillian on occasions, and has a picture of Cleo with
Lillian when Cleo was approximately 10 years old.
All family members that I have talked to about Lillian are of the
opinion that she was less than 100% mentally developed. In A.C.'s
application for a Confederate Soldier's pension, filed in Denton
County, Texas, in 1899, he included information that he had two
unmarried daughters living at home, "--one ---is of weak mind
resulting from spasms and convulsions". To anyone's knowledge,
Lillian was never married.
As of this writing, I have been unable to verify a death record for
Lillian. The date of her death and the location of her burial are
unknown to me at this time. Parents: Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER.

and Elizabeth Harwell. The 1870 Federal Census lists Rebecca as a
1-year old born in Arkansas residing with her parents and siblings in
Conway County, Arkansas. She died on 12 Jan 1945 in Smithfield, Texas. She was buried on 14 Jan 1945 in Smithfield, Texas. Parents: Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER.

Spouse: Richard Franklin LEWIS. Richard Franklin LEWIS and Rebecca (Mel) HARWELL were married in 1886 in Smithfield, Texas. Rebecca (Mel) and Richard were likely married in or around Lewisville,
Texas, sometime in 1886 since her first child, Verney, was born in May
1887, and Mel would have been a young 17 (almost 18) at that time. Children were: Verney Coleman LEWIS, Frankey Lula LEWIS.

Spouse: Thomas J. BRADLEY. Thomas J. BRADLEY and Rebecca (Mel) HARWELL were married in 1895 in Smithfield, Texas. Sometime after Mel's first husband and father of her two children met
his untimely death, she married Thomas Bradley. At this writing, we

Robin A. HARWELL. Parents: Clarence U. J. HARWELL and Nancy Marie SUDDUTH.

Rood Alfonso HARWELL was born on 6 Apr 1903 in Grapevine, Texas. He died on 19 Aug 1945 in Fresno Co., California. According to State of California records, Rood died in Fresno County,
California on August 19, 1945 from complications of stomach cancer.. He was buried on 20 Aug 1945 in Fresno Co., California. Internment was by cremation. Rood was the second of three children of Lewis Monroe (Mon) and Myrtle
Harwell. Rood was a steel worker. As his cousin Mutt Harwell recalls,
he was non-union, not a popular position in those days.
Rood was married twice. He had four children by his first wife,
Jessie DeLoach, and, reportedly, one child by his second wife, a lady
named Morgan. I don't have any information on Morgan at this writing,
nor the identity or fate of his child by this marriage.
According to Rood's granddaughter, Linda Heffley, and verified by his
daughter, Loretta Shoremeyer, Rood and Jessie were divorced about
1940, and Rood remarried Morgan, who lived in Santo, Texas. He had a
daughter by his marriage to Morgan, but I have no information on that
marriage. He later divorced Morgan, after which he moved to
California, where he resided until his death in 1945. California
records indicate that he died in Fresno County in that year. Parents: Lewis Monroe (Mon) HARWELL and Myrtle ROOD.

Spouse: Jessie Darcus DE LOACH. Rood Alfonso HARWELL and Jessie Darcus DE LOACH were married in 1923 in Smithfield, Texas. They were divorced in 1940 in Tarrant Co., Texas. Children were: Loretta HARWELL, R. A. HARWELL, Clarence U. J. HARWELL, Jessie Mae HARWELL.

Spouse: MORGAN. Rood Alfonso HARWELL and MORGAN were married in 1940 in Texas. Following his divorce from Jessie, Rood married a lady whose last name
was Morgan, and took up residency in Santo, Texas, near Weatherford,
where Morgan resided. Rood and Morgan had one child, a daughter. We
have no information regarding this person. They were divorced in 1942 in Texas. From the information we have at this writing, shortly after the birth
of his daughter from this marriage, Rood divorced his wife and moved
to California.

Roy Clarence (Mutt) HARWELL was born on 17 Jun 1911 in Smithfield, Texas. Mutt told me that when he was a child, after Jake and Polly were born,
their home was "near a red brick building at the east end of the town
(of Smithfield, Texas, now part of North Richland Hills) just before
the railroad tracks", and that "the current post office building sits
where the watermelon patch was". He died on 10 Aug 1996 in Corona, California. Mutt had survived several previous medical crises including lung
cancer and bypass heart surgery. Prior to his death, however, he
contracted another cancer, this time in his remaining good lung.
Mutt was an incessant smoker, though in later years, he quit
cigarettes and smoked only a pipe. However, in his last months, while
on a steady diet of oxygen, he continued to enjoy his pipe!
He entered the hospital sometime in May or June of 1996, never to
return home. I visited his grave on September 1st and told him that
we celebrated his unique life, and appreciated his life, and the light
of his life that had shown on all who knew him. He was buried on 14 Aug 1996 in Norco, California. Mutt was buried in the Masonic Garden section of Crestview Memorial
Park next to Onella, who had preceded him in death in December 1985. Roy Clarence Harwell, "Mutt" as he was known to his family and
friends, was a most unique individual. My first recollections of him
were as a four or five year old living with my family in Houston,
Texas, when Mutt would stay with us while on business trips from Fort
Worth. He always seemed happy and outgoing, and, it seems, always
drove a new car! He was a world traveler - I've seen pictures and
listened to him describe his trips to Egypt and other far flung places
most of us, especially then, only read about. He later told me that
he had ridden a train through Harwell, England, but did not disembark
while he was there. He was a light aircraft pilot and owned his own
airplane at one time which he used primarily for business trips to
locations otherwise not accessible by commercial airlines. He was an
adventurer and a fighter. He told me many stories, and I've heard
others from various sources, about his exploits.
Mutt was a rare individual - an individualist! Parents: Clarence HARWELL and Effie Ann LITTLE.

Spouse: Hattie Onella TERRY. Roy Clarence (Mutt) HARWELL and Hattie Onella TERRY were married on 23 Dec 1950 in Lovington, New Mexico. Mutt told me he had actually been married four times, including twice
to the same lady, Dorothey, whom I knew personally. He had no
children by his previous three marriages before he married Onella.
Onella had two children by a previous marriage, and they had one
child, Clarence Paul, together. Mutt became a devoted husband and
father, including a loving stepfather to his two stepchildren and all
their second generation offspring. His marriage to Onella obviously
had a settling effect! Children were: Clarence Paul HARWELL.

William A. (Will) HARWELL was born on 11 Jun 1865 in Tennessee. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. The 1870 Cencus shows Will to be a 5-year old born in Tennessee. He died on 30 Jun 1901 in Lewisville, Denton Co., Texas. Will Harwell was shot to death by a relative of a black man named
Munroe Champion whom Bill had accidentally wounded the night before.
He had gone to the home of another relative of Mr. Champion's, Mr. Ike
Allen, to check on Mr. Champion's condition when the assailant, a
cousin of Munroe Champion named Cull Champion, pulled a gun and shot
him in the face as he was leaving the Allen residence. The assailant
made a quick exit and was never apprehended even though two posses
were formed to search for him.
The story of the accidental shooting of Mr. Champion, his treatment by
one Dr. Kennedy, a neighbor of Will Harwell's, and the subsequent
assault of Will Harwell and search for assailant Cull Champion are
chronicled in the July 6th issue of [IT:The Lewisville Enterprise:IT],
a copy of which is in the family archives in the possession of Frankie
Lou Mesnard, a grand-niece of Will Harwell.
At the time of his demise, Will and his wife Susie resided in a house
on the northeast corner of Main and Kealy streets in Lewisville. The
house has been replaced with another residential structure, but the
house directly across Main Street where Dr. Kennedy lived at the time
of the shootings still stands and currently houses "The Veranda"
Restaurant and Gift Shop.
Frankie Lou Mesnard recalls that one of Will's nephews, Ray Harwell,
and his family, whose home was in California, would always make it a
point to visit the house Will was living in at the time of his death
when they made their annual trip to Texas to visit relatives.
Will's Widow, Susie, later married a Mr. Gary and moved to Mobeetie,
Texas. See the text on Susie's entry for more.

An account of the shooting as well as the events leading up to the
shooting were reported in a full page article in the "Lewisville
Enterprise". There was also a short article on the front page
describing how two posse's sent in search of the assassin encountered
each other accidentally and ended up shooting at each other. No one
was killed. Neither was the murderer apprehended. He was buried on 2 Jul 1901 in Lewisville, Denton Co., Texas. Will preceded both of his parents in death. His mother, Elizabeth,
died the following year (1902), and his father, Alfonso (A. C.) lived
until 1914. Will was placed in an unmarked grave in Smith Cemetery
near where his parents were later interred. Will was the second of eight children born to A. C. and Elizabeth
Harwell. He had one older sister and three each younger brothers and
sisters. Parents: Alfonso Coleman HARWELL and Mary Elizabeth MILLER.

Spouse: Susie. William A. (Will) HARWELL and Susie were married in 1895 in Smithfield, Texas. At this writing, not much is known about Susie, or when or where She
and Will were married. Neither do we know her maiden name or where
her home was. It is probably safe to assume that they were from the
same general area, and had been married a relatively short time, since
they were childless at the time of Will's death at age 36.
