Susanna HERBEIN was born in 1698 in Oley Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. She died on 22 Feb 1763 in Oley Twp., Berks Co., Pennsylvania. She was buried about 25 Feb 1763 in Oley Twp., Berks Co., Pennsylvania. Hoch Private Cemetery #1 She has Ancestral File Number MH52-FP. Jonathan HERBEIN is most likely the brother of Susanna. He is most likely not her father, because one of Susanna and Johannes' sons married Esther HERBEIN, the daughter of Jonathan HERBEIN.

From:
ANNALS OF OLEY VALLEY The Herbein Family

AMONG THE EARLY SETTLERS. We find that another old and honored family name of Berks County present-day citizens was represented among the original settlers of the Oley Valley. It is that by the name of HERBEIN, which is variously spelled, having gone through all the transformations of HARBYN, HARBEIN, HARPINE, HERBINE, and HERBEIN.

We early find... representatives by this name, Jonathan... The... name appears first in a list of petitioners for the erection of Oley Township of date September 5, 1720, where it is given as Jonathan HERBEIN.

Jonathan HERBEIN must have taken a prominent part in the early activates of the Moravian Church of Oley. Reverend Professor William J HINKLE, D.O., in his Life and Letters of Reverend John Philip BOEHM, quotes a document found in the Moravian Archives of Bethlehem, which gives us the information that Jonathan HERBEIN opened his house to Reverend Henry ANTES preaching there in 1736. It is as follows:

In the year 1736, Henry ANTES came to Oley and preached there with blessing- He found an entrance there and several were touched by the truth. The people expressed a great desire to hear his sermons, for which reason he visited this place faithfully. There were at that time all kinds of spirits in Oley, of which the New Born were the dominant party. Dear ANTES was not equal to them. He waited, therefore, for the time when the Lord Himself would check them, which took place in the following manner: In the-year 1737, our dear and reverend brother SPANGENBERG had come to Georgia and from there had traveled to Pennsylvania, which he reached in that year. He stayed for a little while at Skippack, where he heard of the work of the dear brother, Henry ANTES. He then resolved to visit Oley and came there in the year 1737, accompanied by the sainted WIEGNER.

He is the first Moravian brother who came to Oley and there he gave such testimony regarding the meritorious death of Christ, with such a demonstration of the Spirit that the power of darkness received a severe blow. His
first sermon was delivered in the house of Jonathan HERBEIN and the second in the house of Abraham BERTOLET. He attacked the New Born in his discourse from the words of I John 1:7 8-9. Through this address the spirit of the New Born was so broken that it could not gain strength again and is daily becoming weaker.

Thus there was living in Oley this Jonathan HERBEIN. We have already mentioned that his name appears in the list of residents, mostly written in a German hand, who on September 5, 1720, petitioned the Court of Philadelphia County for a separate township for this Oley region. Because it contains many names of the early settlers of Oley we append the list in full as follows: John LONGWORTHY, Benjamin LONGWORTHY, John Henry KIRSTEN, Hans HELFIN WEEK, Johannes KEIHM (KEIM), Jacob KOCH, Abraham ZIMMERMAN, Engel POTTER, Jacob PLANCK (de la P), Joannes JUNG, Martin SHENKEL, Isaac LENNERD, Isaac DETURCK, John YODER, Hans SCHNEIDER, George KREIDER, Henry BAKER, Hans KLEMMER, Peter BERTOLET, Samuel SAUL, Philip KUHLWEIN, Hans SIEGFRIED, Jonathan HERBEIN, Jacob STAUBER (STOBER), Arnold HUFFNAGLE, Anthony LEE, Jost YODER, George BOONE, Peter TRACKSLER (TREXLER) , Richard GREGORY, and Abraham ASHMAN,

Here we have Quakers, Huguenots, New Born, German Reformed, and Lutherans unite in one purpose irrespective of creed or language. We wonder who was the progressive prime mover?

ANOTHER DOCUMENT. But there is still another document extant which has Jonathan HERBEINs-name attached and which gives him more historical importance in the neighborhood than as a mere fellow petitioner for a new township. It throws considerable light on the Moravian religious movement of Oley, and we shall make free quotation from it.

It seems that Henry ANTES' early preaching tours to Oley were in the interests of his own Reformed people, of which he was long recognized as one of the most pious and active laymen. To this faith doubtless originally clung most of the early Huguenot and German immigrants, but at this time under the spell of the New Born, influence. ANTES, as lay preacher, doubtless sought to-dissuade these BAUMANN enthusiasts back into the Reformed fold, but felt himself too weak. The able and antagonistic Reverend WEISS had visited this section and bitterly attacked BAUMANN by speech and printed document. Finally came along the learned bishop of the Moravians, Reverend A.G. SPANGENBERG, who seems to have been able to turn the tide. But while the tide in its flow swept the Baumannite foundations away, it ebbed out practically everything into Moravian channels for the time being. It carried ANTES himself along, head and heart and hand, from out of his mother church, the Reformed, into this new cult of the Herrnhuters. Jonathan HERBEIN was won over. He had opened his house to Bishop SPANGENBERG's preaching. A new revival was soon inaugurated, which was destined to sweep the Oley Valley from one end to the other. From SPANGENBERG's and WHITFIELD's information Count ZINZENDORF, of Europe, became interested in the Oley situation and sent forth Andrew ESCHENBACH, of Naumburg, as missionary to Oley. He reached the colony October, 1740, and was introduced to the people in Oley by Henry ANTES, soon making his permanent home with Johannes LEINBACH Sr, who was a native of Langen Selbot, where ESCHENBACH was born in 1674, and served for several years as organist in the Reformed Church of which his host's family had been members before emigrating to Pennsylvania in 1723.

MEETS WITH SUCCESS. Missionary ESCHENBACH met with immediate and wide success. He preached-in-houses and barns throughout the Oley region and opened Moravian mission stations, or at least prepared the way for such to be immediately opened, at Germantown, Skippach, Fredericktown, Conestoga (Donegal), Tulpehocken, Heidelberg, and Mill Creek, possibly Hebron and Bethel in present Lebanon County. The following year (1741) a great awakening occurs in Oley. The ancient document, now in the Bethlehem Archives, reports that "ESCHENBACH preached during the year with power and conviction. The entire township was in a state of excitement. One saw the people in crowds on their way to hear the Gospel".

The Moravian congregation soon formed enrolled the following: Frantz RITTER, Rude HAE (Rudolph HOCH), Jean BERTOLET and wife, John Heinrich NEEWKIRCH and wife, John LEINBACH Sr and wife, Heinrich LEINBACH and wife, John LEIN- BACH Jr and wife, Frederick LEINBACH and wife, Jacob BUERSTLER and wife, Stephen SHOEMAKER and wife, Mr KINTZER, Jacob and Michael VETTER, John De- TURCK, Abraham LEVAN - ----- KELCHER and wife, Casper NEIN and wife, Jonathan HARPEIN (HERBEIN) and wife, Samuel HOCH, Abraham BERTOLET, John LEISHER (LESH- ER), Peter BERTOLET's sons, Ludwig HUEBNER, Abraham HESS, Matthias HOFFMAN, Joseph SHEBOCH, Martin LEICK, Samuel MANN, G JUNGMANN, John J SCHNEIDER, Peter SCHNEIDER, Catharine COGIN, Catharine OPPIN, and Elizabeth SCHNEIDERIN.

So here we find Jonathan HERBEIN enrolled in this new-born spiritual flock, to be a congregation in the Spirit, without surrendering his earlier religious tenets or denominational adherence. Then came the Count Ludwig Von ZINZENDORF and his party and the Series of Conferences of 1742 under his control. HERBEIN attended some of these. An attempt was made to organize the various sects and denominations represented at the Oley session (February 9, 10, and 11, 1742) into a permanent body, when discord arose. A consistory was to be elected by lot, which declared Jonathan HERBEIN and Frantz RITTER chosen. HERBEIN protested, "deeming himself unworthy and incapable of eldership". Finally, however, they accepted, but while attending a later conference, held in Germantown this same spring, they fell out with ZINZENDORF. HERBEIN wrote a long letter in reply to ZINZENDORF's request to state his position, from which we quote at length. It shows the ability and character of HERBEIN and sheds light on the early confusion and disruption of the Moravian movement in Oley. The letter is as follows:

JONATHAN HERBEIN'S LETTER. Dear Friend and Brother: With this opportunity I desire to comply with your request to present the course of events in writing faithfully and truly as follows: When conditions were, as they are well known to you, ESCHENBACH came to us and spoke of beautiful institutions, including the education of the children and the preaching of the Gospel according to the pure custom of the Apostles, i.e. without any sectarianism, freely and without charge. And since there was nothing objective in these representations we consented. He, however, demanded a call from us, which was granted and signed by some.

But when the Count (ZINZENDORF) came there was a once talk of a congregation; he wanted at once to make elders and also helpers and servants, which was done. Then he gave directions how a meeting house should be built, about which a quarrel arose. One party wanted it simple, the other wanted it grand and stately, which as of old, at Babel, caused a confusion for which I unfortunately had to bear the blame. Because it was I who had made the proposition for a plain building and most of the people sided with me.

Upon which the Count told me "I should recognize that I had sinned against the Saviour in this case". But my conscience did not accuse me, because it was evident to me that there was more of a desire for external show in this matter before hearts were inwardly converted or renewed.

This was not without a special revelation of God. For meanwhile the adherents of the Count claimed that the Saviour had assured them that there should be a congregation in Oley. When, by means of the lot, the plans had been made, they demanded of us that we should hold conferences three times a week, in order to reveal our thoughts to one another, to act unitedly and to consider how best souls could be won and brought in, for which we were thought to have sufficient ability. Regarding this I got into a dispute and I said that I could not consent to it. For it seemed too simple and trivial through an easily controlled lot to secure all the necessary ability to convert souls.

The Count represented to us that such mistrust was only at the beginning. He acted very friendly, came to us, embraced and kissed us and said: "I must love my brethren". Through this means he desired to set everything right. But there were more difficulties to be met. They thought by their cunning and love, together with flattery, they might cast their ropes around our necks. They wanted to ordain us by the laying on of hands in order to better convey to us their magical powers, since we were expected to partake with them of the Holy Supper. This I declined and told them I would not come. ESCHENBACH said that I was such a suspicious brother that I should tell him what was the matter with me.

RETRACES HIS STEPS. I answered: "You promised us that we should neither be dependent on Herrnhut or the Moravian brethren, but should be a congregation of Christ. Why then to be ordained by men? Rather we should implore and await from the Saviour, that He give us wisdom and ability". And thus it remained until the next Conference, where for two days nothing but controversial matters regarding SCHOENFELD and other matters were brought forward.

Frantz RITTER finally asked what the word "to forbear" meant, that they should interpret it to him. The sly Count, because he knew what questions were likely to follow, asked: "Who is it that speaks"? The answer came, "Frantz RITTER". Whereupon the ardent Count broke forth in a storm: "You men from Oley, you do not belong to the congregation and have nothing to do with our conference".

Then Frantz RITTER arose and spoke his mind, and putting his hand on the door, said: "Then continue in your self-righteousness" and left. On account of this the fire burnt more vehemently until finally he (ZINZENDORF) began: "Yea, men of Oley are hypocrites and liars, one should have debarred you from the first conference, but you ran after me, made apologies and kissed me". At which I arose and said: "This is an apparent untruth, for he came to us and kissed us and now impeaches us. We are not liars, but truth loving souls". However, since no arguments were credited and Ludwig (ZINZENDORF) spoke only out of vehemence, I said: "Here is only strife and it does not depend thereon that one belongs to a large congregation, for the Saviour says that 'Where two or three are gathered together in His name there will He be in the midst of them', opened the door and went away wishing them much good". Signed J Jonathan HERBEIN.

The letter continues reciting the various steps by which HERBEIN and the leaders of the Moravian movement became utterly alienated.

The probability is that Mr HERBEIN returned to his Reformed Church relations, from whence he had been temporarily swept by the Moravian revival, for with the breakdown of the Moravian Church in Oley and the shifting of its center to Bethlehem and elsewhere, the Reformed and Lutheran people began to receive more attention from their own shepherds and thus began to find themselves.
