"Bible Family for 100 years. S. B. Hodges, contractor, of this city, was showing the Express editor this week a Bible that had been in the family home for more than 100 years. The Bible was purchased by his grandfather at Gallatin, Sumner county, Tennessee, about the year 1837. The book shows it was published in 1829....Some of the leaves are missing, and the book has come apart. A fire in the Hodges home several years ago was responsible for most of the damage to the book....The original owner of the Bible was Chris (Chrisley) Hodges...Upon his demise the Bible fell to his son, R. A. Hodges...Upon his death, his son become the heir of same. There are several records in this Bible written with pin and ink and legible. This Bible was bound with thick morocco and either the grandfather or father of cap Hodges used the front cover to sharpen his razor, as it is worn slick. Anna Maria HOLMES was born on 8 Jun 1852 in Stockholm, Sweeden. According to family information as recorded by her grandson, Alfred B.
Nichols, Annie was of peasant stock and belonged to the Lutheran
Church. At age fifteen, the last of her family members, as far as she
knew, died. Soon afterward, the pastor of her church, who was looking
after her, arranged for her passage to the United States, being signed
to a domestic contract to a family in Boston. About 1867, then, she
sailed for America. She emigrated in 1867 from Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. The vessel she crossed the Atlantic in was a small sailing ship. The
passengers had to provide their own food for the trip, which consisted
mostly of dried and salted foods and kegs of beer. It was a rough
trip in which a number of storms were encountered delaying their
arrival by several weeks. Annie was one of the few who did not get
sick. She spent much of her time nursing the sick and helping to bury
the dead at sea. (This is what she remembered of the trip some
fifty-five years afterward in discussions with Alfred). She died on 27 Mar 1935 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas. She was buried on 28 Mar 1935 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas. Annie had a very interesting and adventurous life. She was orphaned
as a teenager in her native Sweden. At age 15, in 1867, she sailed
to America, her passage being paid by a family in Boston to whom she
was indebted as an "indentured servant" for a specified period of time
to reimburse them. She then married Charles Forsburg, and made her
way to Texas with her husband, giving birth to six children along the
way. After the death of her first husband, father of all her
offspring, she remarried. She also outlived her second husband and
made her own way "-- selling DEO salve and Indian Herb pills, until
her death in 1935, at the home of (her oldest child) Josie Woolsey",
as recorded by her grandson, Alfred Nichols.
Spouse: Charles FORSBURG. Charles FORSBURG and Anna Maria HOLMES were
married in 1873 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. Upon completion
of her domestic contract, Annie and Charles Forsburg
married. Charles was born in Sweden. Family data had his birth
year as 1837, but his death certificate shows 1839. We have no record
of when he came to America. Charles was a cecgtion foreman on a
railroad when he and Annie met in Boston. According to Annie, they
were at a party together in 1873 when someone dared them to get
married, and, Annie said ," Come on Charles", and so they did!
Charles and his brothers "were all large strong Swedes" and the four
of them went to work building the railroad. Annie cooked and cared
for the construction crew as they made their way across the plains
laying tracks, sometimes living in tents. Their first child, Josie,
was born in New Hampshire (see below), and the others along the way,
the last, Ida Florence, being born in Kansas City, Kansas. Their
final destination was Dallas, Texas, where the children grew up.
Annie told Alfred that Forsburg was not the real family name, but one
adopted by the brothers, not an uncommon occurrence at that time in
history among immigrants to this country. Alfred's brother Gerald
tells another story that he says was told to him by Annie, which is
outlined below.
Gerald tells me that the family name was previously "Jonsson" or
"Johanson", and that at one point in the family's migration across
the
country with the railroad, they spent some time in Minnesota. They
were living on a mail route that included a number of families with the
same name, and were having problems getting their mail. So, Charles
decided to change their name to Forsburg! Gerald said this
information was given directly to him by his grandmother, Annie.
Annie told of encounters with "cowboys" along the way: "As the
railroad advanced, railheads or supply depots were set up. Besides
the necessities of life, the usual camp followers - entertainers,
whiskey, cards, and women - were around waiting for payday. The
cowboys for miles around would ride in, get drunk, lose their money
and then shoot up the place. On almost every payday and visits by the
cowboys, by midnight there was a free-for-all fist tight between the
railroaders and the cowboys which sometimes got real rough".
As the family made its way across the country, Charles' brothers
dropped out along the way and disappeared. The family finally settled
in Dallas, Texas, where the children all grew up and left home. The
youngest, Ida, was married in 1903. Then on May 16, 1906, Charles
passed away. He is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas, in an
unmarked grave. It is written in the cemetery record book, which I
have seen. I have also seen the grave site. Children were: Ida Florence FORSBURG, Johannah
Sophie FORSBURG, Christine Charlotte

M. CROWLEY. A. M. CROWLEY and Anna Maria HOLMES were married in 1907 in Dallas,
Dallas Co., Texas. Sometime after Charles Forsburg's death, Annie
remarried. She and her
husband later moved to Fort Worth and lived on East Lancaster Street
near what is now the Tarrant County Orphans Home. I recall being told
that Mr. Crowley was, or at some point became, an alcoholic, the
burden of livelihood then falling to Annie. Mr. Crowley preceded
Annie in death.
Mary Adline "Addie" HOLT was born on 25 May 1866 in McNairy Co., Tennessee. She died on 8 Feb 1952 in Chester Co., Tennessee. She was buried in Henderson, Chester Co., Tennessee. Buried at Pesgeih Cemetery.
