Jacob J. MARKLEE was born about 1830 in Canada. He lived in Sacremento, California about 1849. As a young man, Jacob migrated to California and opened a meat
business in the Sacramento area. He was later joined by his brother
and half-brother, Jeremiah Marklee and John Nichols, after which he
relocated to what is now Alpine County, California. He lived in Markleeville, Alpine Co., California on 12 Sep 1861. Jacob laid claim to an 160 acre site in what is now Markleeville,
Alpine County, California. At the time he settled there, it was
thought to be in Nevada Territory, but was later determined to be part
of California after a California-Nevada boundary survey in 1863 (the
Ives Survey). Alpine County was formed out of parts of the adjoining
counties of Amador, Toulumne, El Darado, Calaveras, and Mono, and was
named Alpine due to its rugged mountain peaks and beautiful high
mountain lakes. The Alpine County Courthouse now stands on the
original site of Jacob Marklee's cabin. He died in 1863 in Markleeville, Alpine Co., California. The following information appears in "One Hundred Years of History *
Recreation * Lore in Alpine County, California 1864 - 1964", page 13:
[BO:Jacob J. Marklee was the first inhabitant of the area. As
recorded in the Douglas County, Nevada records, he located a land
claim upon the 160 acre tract which is now the townsite of
Markleeville, on September 12, 1861. The Alpine County Courthouse
stands on the site of his cabin, which, according to old-timers, was
built entirely of wood and shakes. The doors had three wooden hinges;
and shakes were riven from three-foot bolts of sugarpine, whenever
possible, and used as shingles. Most of his income apparently was
derived from tolls paid by miners crossing the bridge he built to span
the "Middle Fork" of the Carson River (Markleeville Creek).
That Marklee met an untimely end is evidenced by the following
quotation from the [IT:Sacramento Union,:IT] [BO:January 19, 1864:
"Markleeville takes its name from Jacob I. (sic) Marklee, who first
took up the ground and laid out the town, and who was shot and killed
last Spring by one Tuttle, who is now in jail in Jackson for that
crime, in a quarrel about the ranch on which the town stands." H. W.
Tuttle was subsequently tried and found "Not Guilty" on March 24,
1864, in District Court of Amador County. From notes of instruction
to the jury, it would seem that the killing had been in
self-defense.:BO]
:BO]At the time of Jacob's death, a brother, Jeremiah Marklee, and
their half-brother, John Nichols, both of whom were residing in the
Sacramento area at the time, went to Markleeville, but were unable to
learn anything or recover any of Jacob's belongings. They buried him
there in Markleeville. He was buried in 1863 in Markleeville, Alpine Co., California. Parents: Jacob MARKLEE and Dorothy ROSENBARGER.
