According to State archives in Metz, France, he sold his property in 1747 to move to New Land.

Jacob was born in Abreschviller, but grew up in Helleringen, an off-road farming town that was part of the principality of Lixheim. According to records, he was baptized on 17 Oct 1714, three days after his birth. Although his parents were Calvinists, the Catholic Church was the only one nearby, so baptisms were all performed at the Catholic Church. Jacob's godfather was Jean Poinselot, the miller of Abreschviller, and his godmother was Clair Abba, also of Abreschviller.

His father died when Jacob was less than seven years of age and his mother remarried to Lorentz Leyenerger of Rauweiler. As a result, Jacob gained the acquaintance of Lorent's sister, Maria Leyenberger, six years Jacob's elder, and they married in 1735. Jacob thus became his mother's brother-in-law. The record of this marriage is found at Rauweiler, which had become a separate parish from the Deidendorf parish in 1722. The Reformed Church in Rauweiler, built in the 1730's still stands in Rauweiler today. Here are also found the baptismal records of the European born children of Jacob and Maria, all of whom immigrated with their parents in 1747.

Jacob was a linen weaver while he lived in Europe though he became a farmer, by necessity, after his immigration to Pennsylvania. He and Maria owned property in Helleringen, having purchased a house there on 17 Mar 1738 from Jean Pierre Pierronnet. The property is described as consisting of a house, barn and stable, comforts and dependances. It was situated on the common street, beside properties of Lorens juillin on the one side and Jean Leyonart on the other, and abutting the garden of Jean Conrad Gouttefrind in the back. At the same time, they purchased a garden nearby.

In 1746/7, Jacob and Maria sold this property as well as pieces of land originally owned by Jacob's mother, Magdalena Vautrin. Apparently they were preparing for their journey to America. The signatures of Jacob Schwanger that appears on the documents are identical to the signature that appears on the oath of allegiance in Philadelphia on 20 Oct 1747.

Michael SCHWANGER was born about 1680 in Abreschviller, Germany. He lived in Helleringen, Lorraine, Germany in 1717. He died before 1720 in Helleringen, Lorraine, Germany. He was a Miller. Apparently, he took over Helleringen Mill after his father-in law's death. After Michael Schwanger married in 1701 to Magdalena, daughter of the miller Hans Peter Vautrin, the couple lived initially and until at least 1714 in Elbersweiler (Abreschviller). But not long after the death of her father in 1713, Michael and his family moved to Helleringen where he operated for some time the mill that had belonged to his father-in-law together with other members of his wife's family. After his death (prior to 1720), he is referred to as the "deceased miller of Helleringen" upon the occasion of his wife's remarriage.

Michael and Magdalena were Calvinists. Reformed subjects in Abreschviller after 1712 were allowed to retain their religious convictions and were given little special notice. Baptisms were performed by the catholic priest and the baptismal records were entered into the Catholic records, the Catholic Church being the only one close by, with the only stipulation being that the parents had to promise that the child should be given free choice of religion (meaning he should be allowed to become Catholic if he so chose). Parents: Nicolaus (Nickel) SCHWANGER and Magdalena FALMEN.

Nicolaus SCHWANGER was born about 1711 in Abreschviller, Germany. He was baptized on 18 Oct 1711 in Abreschviller, Germany. As Calvinist in the Catholic church Parents: Nicolaus (Nickel) SCHWANGER and Anna Maria KÖNIG.

Nicolaus (Nickel) SCHWANGER was born about 1660 in Switzerland. He died after 1711 in Germany. Place is assumed. He was a Lumber Merchant. He lived in Elbersweiler, Dachsburg, Germany. Now it is spelled Abreschviller, and in the French records as well. The grandfather of the Jacob Schwanger who immigrated to America in 1747 was a lumber merchant in a small farming community called Elbersweiler (in German) or Abreschviller (in French), in the Vosges mountains some 40 miles west of Strasbourg. The town belonged to the county of Dagsburg (or Dabo in French) that was ruled over by the counts of Leiningen-Dagsburg-Hardenburg. In contrast to other regions along the German/French boundary, Dagsburg was relatively untouched by the Reformation, the population remaining largely Catholic. Within the catholic population, the Protestants were a vanishing minority. They called themselves Reformed but were called Calvinists by the Catholic majority. Nicolaus Schwanger and his family were part of this small minority. All of the known Reformed families in this county were of Swiss origin, having migrated to Dagsburg county in several waves between 1650 and 1720. Although Nicolaus' origin is not expressly known, another Schwanger of Abreschviller, Hans, likely the uncle of Nicolaus, is referred to explicitly in one document as Swiss. Calvinism had been born in Switzerland in the first half of the 16th century and the Swiss-German emigrants spread the doctrine into nearby France, where the converts became known as Huguenots, and Germany The Calvinist influence even reached England during this time where the group bearing this influence became known as Puritans.

Since the Reformed movement had made little influence on Dagsburg, Nicolaus Schwanger's family had to depend on the Reformed congregation in Deidendorf for the practices of their faith, even though Deidendorf may have been as mush as a day's walk from Abreschviller. All of the baptism records for this family are found in the records of Deidendorf. Deidendorf was the county center of Saarwerden. After 1698, there was a brief respite in the political and religious oppression of the Reformed religions and the Reformed congregation was once again able to install a pastor, Samuel de Perroudet, who served the Reformed families of the region for the next 50 years. The earliest record of Nicolaus Schwanger found in Deidendorf is dated 7 Oct 1699, and concerns the burial of his first wife, Magdalena Falmen. It describes Nicolaus as the honest lumber merchant of Elbersweiler. Herr Nicolaus remarried 12 Oct 1707 to Maria Konig, daughter of a native of Bern, Switzerland. The baptism of the one known son of this second marriage is also found in the Deidendorf records.

Nicolaus Schwanger was probably the son of Benoit Schwanger, though the connection is uncertain. A Nicolaus Schwanger acted as a sponsor for the baptism of Barbe, daughter of Nicholas Bornique and Maria Swanger of Abreschviller. Likewise, a Nicolaus Schwanger served witness to the marriage of his brother, Caspar Schwanger of Abreschviller, son of Benoit Schwanger and Barbe, to Anne Marie Gley on 31 Aug 1694. The same or another Nicolaus Schwanger was witness to the marriage of Ursula Schwanger, daughter of the deceased Hans Schwanger and Barbe Souter of Abreschviller, to Joseph Aime on 27 Apr 1716. Parents: Benoit SCHWANGER and Barbe.
