William Brown enters four hundred acres of Land lying in Northampton County adjoining the lines of John Futrell, Benjamin Hawley, and Arthur Shuffield. Dec 7th 1778. He lived in Northampton Co., North Carolina in 1780. 1780 Tax of Northampton lists only Arthur Shuffield (Value Pounds 818) and (this Ephraim is Arthur's brother) Ephr. Shuffield (Value Pound 1181/17) He appeared in the census in 1786 in North Carolina. Arthur is found in the 1786 NC State Census with seven children.

From the DAR records abstracts of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots volume 4, states Arthur buried in family cemetery 4 miles north of Chapel Hill in Marshall Co. TN. Cemetery Books of Marshall Co. also state that these Sheffield's are buried in Sheffield cemetery, along with many other family members.
A monument was placed over his grave bearing the inscription "Served in
Revolutionary War as Captain."
He has Ancestral File Number KSWR-8K. Surname is also shown as Shuffield. His parents were NOT John Sheffield and Elizabeth West of Dupli Co., NC. They had a son named Arthur, but he m. Permelia Phillips. DAR has verified this.

In the past the DAR accepted papers on JOHN SHEFFIELD of Duplin Co> N.C. that descended through an ARTHUR SHEFFIELD who married LUCRETIA HOGAN. We no longer accept the ARTHUR SHEFFIELD who married LUCRETIA HOGAN as the son of JOHN of Duplin Co. JOHN SHEFFIELD'S son ARTHUR married PERMELIA "

"In August, 1976, some descendents erected a grand headstone there and listed their children. They erroneously listed the wrong Arthur as a son, instead of Arthur, Jr. who died in Tennessee they used, Arthur son of John and his descendents. This was a easy mistake to make as the two Arthurs were only 3 years apart in age. Now it is carved in stone and not easy to correct, and many researchers will make the mistake of using this information as gospel."
